Closing time

[With English note at the bottom]

Mezzodí da Ashley,

Sento scrosciar l’usci.

La messicana stanca reca uguali il

secchio e il ghigno, e

guarda te, che sulle spine siedi,

per misurar di colazione il resto.

Oh, come vorrei aver giá finito il

caffé bollente, che lingua

ha poco prima flagellato.

Sarei miglia e miglia

ormai lontana,

concessa a voi l’agognata pausa

 English

Plus or minus, this below is the meaning of the poem. I am unable to make it “poetic” or “humorous” in English, though!
Title of Poem: At Closing Time
Noon at Ashley’s,
I hear doors creaking.
The tired Mexican holds the
bucket and the grudge the same, and
looks at you, who sit on your toes,
to measure out the rest of your breakfast.
Oh, how I wish I had already finished the
hot coffee, which had lashed my tongue just before.
I’d be miles and miles
away by now,
granted to you the longed-for break
and, to me, the sweet calm of
not having
breathing down on my neck.

Poetry composed at 11:45 AM at Ashley’s donuts in Houston, famous for its long hot coffees and the rigid 12:00 end shift schedule…

Ruggero, reproduced this scene in his photoblog as shown below.
(I SWEAR H E TOOK THE PICTURE AFTER I MADE THE CARTOON. HE WAS ABLE TO CAUGHT ALMOST THE SAME SCENE! NOTE THAT I DRAWN THE PLACE BY MEMORY, SO THAT THE RESULT IS SOMEWHAT DEFORMED)
