A new Flag on our luggage

Two months was all that we had to leave the beloved USA and reach the UK before the Brexit did. The invite came from West Yorkshire, the bright green region in the north of the Island, and we were excited to accept it as a great opportunity, life and professional.
We will miss America and its nice people, still in our life as colleagues and friends, and we know that the many cheap flights connecting the two countries will allow us to call this a “see you soon”, instead of a “goodbye”.
We landed here in England one week ago, and while we are waiting for our quarantine to expire and to be able to start exploring the city, we watch every day from the windows of our apartment the different shades of what seems to be a Flemish painting. The road, the buildings, the tower of the Cathedral lit by inclined sun rays as it always was an afternoon’s golden hour, make us living the atmospheres of the many northern paintings absently watched at the museum in the past, and feeling surprisingly happy about the beginning of the winter.

Due mesi è stato il tempo a disposizione per lasciare gli amati Stati uniti e raggiungere l’Inghilterra prima che lo facesse la Brexit. L’invito questa volta è arrivato dallo West Yorkshire, la regione verde brillante a nord dell’Isola, e siamo stati felici di accettarlo come opportunità di vita e professione. Ci mancherà l’America e la sua gente simpaticissima, alcuni ancora nella nostra vita come colleghi e amici, e sappiamo che, grazie ai voli economici che connettono i due paesi, il nostro è un “a presto”, invece che un “addio”. Siamo atterrati in Inghilterra una settimana fa, e, mentre aspettiamo di poter iniziare a esplorare la città appena finita la quarantena, ogni giorno osserviamo dalle finestre del nostro appartamento le diverse sfumature di quello che somiglia a un quadro fiammingo. La strada, i palazzi, il campanile della cattedrale illuminati dai raggi obliqui del sole come in un perenne pomeriggio, ci fanno vivere le atmosfere dei molti dipinti nordici guardati distrattamente nei musei, e ci fanno sentire inaspettatamente felici dell’inizio dell’inverno.
